— by Emanuel Barling, Jr. Esq and Ashley F. Brooks R.N. – $19.95 (Paperback)
Organic meals are more appetizing in every aspect while avoiding the dangerous chemicals in food additives appearing on the labels of caned, frozen and packaged foods. Organic foods satisfy your hunger with lesser portions while providing nature’s only guarantee for good health and longevity.
Mannie’s Diet also focuses on the importance of natural enzyme supplements. You can effectively stop, minimize or control the effects of inflammation leading to illness and disease by taking natural enzyme supplements. Mannie’s Diet and Enzyme Formula are neither expensive nor burdensome.
The goal of our books is to help change a person’s lifestyle to prevent arthritis, gout, Crohn’s, IBD, IBS, heart disease, cancer, liver, kidney ailments and other illnesses and diseases caused by inflammation, allergy, intolerance or genetic predisposition. We believe based upon our experiences that Mannie’s Diet and Enzyme Formula are the ultimate in preventive medicine.
We cite more than 1,500 medical treatises, journals, surveys, tests and periodicals in the References section of this book in support of our facts, theories and opinions. You can look up every theory and opinion and read the source material yourself.
“Mr. Barling’s amazing recovery can only be attributed to his research into the history of natural digestive enzymes and his formula limiting the pain and physical limitations of his arthritis, gout and IBD.”

Reviews
I admit it. I’m a sucker for a book about nutrition and how it affects the body. No, I haven’t jumped on the organic bandwagon yet, but I have been debating it. There are so many diseases and illnesses that have been proven to be directly affected by the food choices we make. I’m no health guru, but I do know what makes me feel better and what makes me feel worse. We’ve all had those times when we’ve eaten something and realized about an hour later that it was a mistake. OK, enough of my opinions here, let’s get on with the book review!
After Mannie and his wife became ill, they started doing their homework. I won’t go into all the details of what they’ve been through or how they came to find their breakthroughs, but you can feel free to investigate yourself. This book is not written after several test trials. Mannie isn’t some world famous doctor. What’s contained in this book are the truths that Mannie uncovered for himself through what appears to be years of extensive research and self-trials.
First look at the book shows that it’s huge. Don’t be thwarted by it’s size though. One fourth of the book is comprised of food lists and references. The rest of the book deals with different diseases and how they’re affected by food, different types of food, enzyme information, Mannie’s own personal diet, theories on eating (how much and how often), and interesting anecdotes. The most important part of this book is the plan for figuring out your own personal healthy eating plan. Since each of our bodies is constructed differently, logically foods will react differently with each of us. Mannie shows us how to use an elimination formula to best find the foods that react best with our bodies for ultimate health and healing.
This book is not written for those of you who want to find a few recipes quickly or want a pull-out chart telling you exactly what to do. This is in-depth reading and not for those who are just looking for another fad diet. This isn’t a diet, it’s a way of life. Each chapter is carefully written with information that needs to be carefully read instead of skimmed. If you’re looking for a healthy alternative for a disease or illness, this may be the book you’re looking for.

A Change Of Lifestyle Diet Designed For Everyone
There are two things that I have enjoyed from my earliest childhood, books and food. Both offer sustenance to me, while my library may be obese, I am certainly far from it! I have been the same 148lbs for decades. I am lucky, about the only food I am intolerant to is anything that comes out of a fast food joint. My intolerance is not based on health issues, just taste and common sense.
A good rule of thumb is that if you read the ingredient list and find stuff you cannot pronounce, move on! A fun, and also educational adventure is to go to your local ‘Megamart’ and pick an item, lets say the good old onion. Most ‘Megamarts’ are designed the same way, the organic onions will be in the furthest orbit available, they will be in the Pluto zone. The mass grown ‘pharm’ onions will be in the next orbit, cheaper, but with pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer oozing out of every layer. Of course this is not listed on the ‘Two for one’ sale sign.
Next stop is the Frozen Veggie aisle. They are awash with frozen onions, but read the bag carefully. Where did these new (unpronounceable) ingredients come from? Some preserve the color, some the taste, some the shelf life.
As we mover closer to the center of the store, we find dried onions. What could be simpler? Chop an onion, dry it, and stick it in a small jar? Wrong! Now even more Ite’s and ate’s have been added. These ite’s and ate’s will help in the reconstitution one the product encounters water.
Somewhere really close to the megamart central aisle you might find onion in a powdered form. By this time the ite’s and ate’s list has grown so large that you need to have access to an electron microscope to read the ingredient list. And you can bet your bottom dollar that Onion is not at the top! The king pins are fillers, that is stuff that just makes it seem that you are getting value for your $dollar.
OK, I am sorry for the food rant, but someone needs to do it.
Mannie Barling is not as lucky as I am, he suffers from a number of health issues, they are most commonly known as Crohns, but this actually covers a wide range of problems including Arthritis, Inflammation, Gout, IBD, and IBS.
Mannie is a man that maintains the credo of you are what you eat. His life has stabilized now that he has found both the foods and amounts that work well for him. Although we are genetically the same, each person is unique. Mannie repeats this throughout the book, some people are more intolerant than others to certain regimes of eating.
This is by no means a pity party, this is a slice of real life. These medical problems can become very serious and life threatening. Our current medical insurance system prefers to ignore them, or subvert them:
“The insurance company actually thought my neighbors would not notice three men in an old van watching our home through binoculars. Although the adjuster apologized when I called it to her attention, I felt the apology was only for being caught.”
Today’s health insurance seems more about health avoidance! There are however many aspects that you yourself can take control of. No! In home heart transplants are a bad idea! But you can do much to improve your health by selecting carefully your choice of foods.
Mannie’s Diet And Enzyme Formula is not designed as a weight loss book, it is a lifestyle primer. The authors do however venture into the ever TV popular weight loss systems such as Jenny Craig and Nutrisystem. The comments were less than stellar. Apparently Ashley Brooks had decided to try the Nutrisystem diet for a while. One of the items she purchased was some cheddar cheese slices:
“Three years later we found an individually wrapped slice of Nutrisystem’s cheddar cheese intentionally hidden in a draw that had not been thrown out because it still looked fresh.”
After another three years:
“It did not age, harden nor change color…”
It does not take much science to see that this is a product that is far from natural. I suppose the good side is that if we do face global Armageddon from nuclear weapons, we can live for thousands of years on Nutrisystem cheese and Twinky bars!
I can hear a bunch of you now “OK so you have beaten us senseless over what not to eat, what’s for supper”?
There are few books that involve food that I do not love a recipe, my favorite in this one has to be the Ceviche. I do however differ with the authors, I would add a taste of cilantro.
From reading this book I walk away with one very important piece of new information. We are all different, yet we all have to co-exist. Restaurants often are not accommodating. I am often asked what I would like from McDonalds, Burger King, etc, I always reply “nothing”. I can always invent a meal with what I can find in the kitchen. I also know that what I find in the kitchen is infinitely better for me than any item on the menu at the fast food outlets.
The title mentions the word ‘Enzyme’, these are substances vital to our well being, however few people take them in the correct levels or ways. Most of us destroy the benefits through the process of cooking. The authors realize that few people are prepared to take on a ‘raw food’ diet (yes there is such a thing). Enzyme balance however can be achieved through dietary supplements.
Only a relatively small proportion of the population have such levels of food intolerance as Mannie Barling, however a very high proportion of the population does suffer from some kind of intolerance, by learning your unique make up you can enhance your life. There are foods I avoid, but they are mostly taste related. I have found that about half the time I eat Pizza, I regret it. The good news is that I do not enjoy the taste anyway, but using this book I could track down the component that my body does not agree with.
Mannie’s Diet and Enzyme Formula is a journey not only into science, but also lifestyle.

Book Review: Mannie’s Diet And Enzyme Formula by Emanuel Barling, Jr., Esq. and Ashley F. Brooks, R.N. – Posted on March 29th, 2011 by Simon Barrett in Book Reviews – A Change Of Lifestyle Diet Designed For Everyone
It is very rare for me to publish a second review of a book. It is equally rare that I read a book a second time. To be honest with you there are many books that I would love to reread but I never seem to have the time.
So what makes Mannie’s Diet And Enzyme Formula different? I can answer that with a single word ‘Knowledge’. When I first saw the book some eight or so months ago I muttered under my breath ‘Oh no, 346 pages of BS (Biological Science)’
Over the ensuing months I have come to know Mannie and Ashley both as friends and for being a veritable treasure trove of information on both health and nutrition.
I quickly learned that Mannie’s Diet And Enzyme Formula was not a book born out of vanity, but of necessity. A trip to your nearest search engine, will show you that there are thousands of diet and nutrition books on the market, from cabbage soup to glorious heaping mounds of crispy fried bacon, there is a diet for every taste!
I mentioned ‘necessity’, let me explain. In 1997 Mannie Barling was diagnosed with colon cancer, his prognosis however was good. The operation was going to be a simple one. The tumor would be removed and he would be as good as new in no time. In actual fact the operation turned out to be much more involved, a second tumor was located and in total 10 feet of his colon was removed. Traumatic as these events were, they were merely the beginning of his odyssey.
The surgery had awakened some sleeping giants, Gout, Crones, IBD and IBS became his new best friends. The medical solution was to prescribe an ever increasing grab bag of pharmaceuticals. As drug interactions and reactions caused further havoc on his body, he and his wife Ashley decided to start their own research.
Through a good deal of trial and error they started to see a disturbing picture. Many of the problems that Mannie had seemed to be rooted in what he ate. But nagging questions remained, why would one steak leave him bedridden for days, yet another have no adverse effects?
The sleuthing team of Emanuel Barling and Ashley F. Brooks went into high gear. They discovered that not all steaks (and I merely use that as an example) are created equal. There is a big difference between the meat from an animal that is allowed to free range and forage, as opposed to those that are products of what we call Factory Farms. The Factory Farm animals are fed an unnatural diet of corn, even worse the corn itself is not natural, but rather a genetically modified variety, something born in the Monsanto Dr. Frankenstein lab, rather than in the open fields.
Beef though is the mere tip of the iceberg. Mannie and Ashley also talk about additives used in other food products. Sodium and MSG are both well known for their detrimental health effects yet they are in almost everything packaged or canned in your supermarket.
It is hard to determine where a book review ends, and a Simon rant begins, so I think I will take the high road and stop here!
You can order your copy of Mannie’s Diet And Enzyme Formula from the Amazon link above.
As companion volumes I also recommend Arthritis, Inflammation, Gout, Crohn’s, IBD, or IBS , and their latest book It’s Not Your Fault.
Mannie and Ashley also run a very active web site Howtoeliminatepain.com, and can be heard every Saturday at 10am pacific, 1pm eastern on Blog Talk Radio just look for Surviving The 21st Century. You can catch a recording of last weeks program here. You can also find our previous episodes here.

For Anyone Looking to Get Healthier
Written as a nutritional guide, this book delves deep into the science of eating. More relevant to those with diseases like Crohn’s, this book can be used by anyone looking to get healthier and decrease digestive pain. Enzymes are explained, measurements are given, and there are even tips on how to cook certain foods. Healthy fast food alternative restaurants are listed, as well as what to do to eat healthy in a foreign nation. Although well researched and organized, the book could do with some pictures. Also, 77 pages of references is a bit much. – Teresa Konopka for Smart Book Reviews (07/31/10)
Emanuel Barling (‘Taking Control of Your Life – A Journey to Wellness’) has, with the assistance of Ashley Brooks, put into words in this very readable book the concepts that he has discovered or grown to appreciate in his own trial by fire. Inflicted with multiple problems with his gastrointestinal tract – surgical excision of malignant tumors in his colon, suffering form Crohn’s disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Irritable Bowl Syndrome, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis – as well as arthritis and gout Barling began to focus on foods he could eat and those that exacerbated his physical maladies.
This is how he gradually came up with the concept of trial by elimination of foods that proved irritants to his system while at the same time examining naturally occurring enzymes that not only improved his multiple medical problems but also led him to the conclusions and helpful advice of the information contained in this book.
MANNIE’S DIET AND ENZYME FORMULA is exactly what its subtitle ‘A Change of Lifestyle Diet Designed for Everyone’ states. Through a casually written, caring book he explains his discoveries and shares with us how to examine how and what we eat in a puzzle type way: this piece goes there, this one doesn’t fit, this one completes the picture.
He lists table of foods high in uric acid, foods that are alkaline, acidic (and those that are seemingly neither!) He also talks about each meal of the day, its importance, what it should and should not contain according to each individual lifestyle, and how to reach all of these levels of understanding in the simplest logical way.
The differences between home prepared meals as opposed to restaurant prepared meals opens some windows of discovery as to what we are eating when we ‘treat ourselves’ to outside dining. He also is very supportive of his new friends, explaining repeatedly how this course of approach to what we eat (and don’t eat) is very simple and can be incorporated to traveling without fear of what we might be subjected to food wise.
One gradually discovers while reading this book that what Mannie is sharing is a conversation with an experienced friend who cares as much about our health as he cares about his own. It is a very supportive read and an indispensible one – especially in this time when obesity and eating habits in this country have become a national dilemma.

Help with Allergies This diet has changed my life. I have been suffering with skin problems for over 25 years. I have been to countless physicians, dermatologists, and immunologists to no avail. Now that I have been following this diet my skin issues have largely dissipated. I only wish I had been able to read it 25 years ago (it wasn’t in print yet).
