Book Review: The Food Revolution Papers by Emanuel Barling Jr. Esq. and Ashley F. Brooks R.N.

Most people probably do not view food as a particularly political subject. They are wrong, food is a hugely political arena. Unfortunately it is a subject that for the most part goes unreported in the press. Sure we hear about Mad Cow disease, or the dangers of Mexican produce, but what we do not hear nearly as much about are the interesting interplay between Big Food, Big Agra, Big Pharma, and the government.
The Food Revolution Papers changes that. The book is actually a collection of essays penned by Mannie Barling and Ashley F. Brooks over the past year. Many of essays have been published here on Blogger News, but it is wonderful to see them put together in a collection.
There are few people more knowledgeable on the subject of politics in the food and drug business than this pair of researchers. What surprised me, actually shocked me was the depth on penetration that big industry has within our governmental system.
The overlords of protecting the people in the food and drug arena are the FDA and USDA. Leadership of these entities is by political appointment and seemingly always someone with a vested interest in Big Food and Big Pharma. It is almost as if these organizations are little more than an exclusive retirement club rather than protectors of modern society.
The industry reach even makes it to the Supreme Court. A great deal of the politics surrounding Big Food and Big Pharma involves the use of GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms), this is the subject of intense debate and the subject of some law suits, the industry rests easy though in the knowledge that one of their own is a Supreme. Clarence Thomas was counsel for the largest manufacturer of GMO seeds, Monsanto before this latest appointment.
The Food Revolution Papers takes the reader on a journey of discovery, and it is a very bleak journey, but s a journey that every American should take.
While it should come as no surprise that this politics for profit, it may come as a surprise to readers when they understand the long term health issues that this unholy trinity of Big Food, Big Pharma, and Government have created.
Mannie Barling and Ashley F. Brooks have done a very fine job in The Food Revolution Papers, it has been meticulously researched and equally importantly they explore the back story.
They ask simple questions such as do you eat MSG? Most people would respond ‘no, isn’t that the stuff that Chinese Restaurants used 40 years ago and it made people sick’? MSG is alive and thriving. It is just too good of a profit maker for Big Food for them to stop using. The trick is to hide it in the ingredient list. Good old MSG has more than 100 alias names that Big Food use on product labels.
The authors explore many other areas as well, from Factory Farms, antibiotics and manure lagoons, to salt and sugar.
The one reoccurring theme is that the consumer is being fed a con job.
The Food Revolution Papers is the 5th book from this writing and research team and in many ways is a natural progression from their last book It’s Not Your Fault. Both books are strongly recommended reading for anyone concerned about health and nutrition.
Oh, and I do want to add, that contrary to the views of Big Food and Big Pharma they are not ‘A couple of anti-science hippies’. Quite the opposite, they embrace science, it is just that they have minor issue with companies paying for ‘independent research’!
You can order your copy of The Food Revolution Papers from better book sellers everywhere or from Amazon using the link above.
They also maintain a very useful web site Howtoeliminatepain.com that has a wealth of articles and other information.
